This coffee hails from the Simbi coffee processing plant, located in the Huye district in the southern province of Rwanda.

Simbi is operated by Abdul, who was inspired by his grandmother to enter the coffee trade. She was a coffee farmer herself and was one of the few rural Rwandans who roasted and enjoyed her own coffee daily. The wash station was constructed between 2011 and 2012.

It officially started operations in 2013 with a team of 85, of which 80 per cent were women. That same year, they competed in the Rwanda Cup of Excellence for the first time and placed 9th out of 159 entries.

The coffee was roasted by us at a fairly low temperature, yet it darkens a bit sooner than most coffees, so it still presents as a medium roast. You'll taste chocolate and stone fruit, with a bit of a fruity finish.

For those interested: SCA score of 84.25.

This coffee hails from the Simbi coffee processing plant, nestled in the Huye district of Rwanda's southern province.

Simbi is managed by Abdul, who was inspired to dive into the coffee scene by his grandmother. She was a coffee farmer herself and one of the few in rural Rwanda who roasted and enjoyed her own coffee as part of her daily rituals. The processing plant was constructed between 2011 and 2012.

It officially kicked off operations in 2013 with a team of 85, 80 per cent of whom were women. In that same year, they threw their hat in the ring for the Rwanda Cup of Excellence for the first time, making an impressive debut by finishing 9th out of 159 entries.

We roast the coffee ourselves at a fairly modest temperature, but it darkens a bit sooner than most coffees, so it still ranks as a medium roast. You'll catch notes of chocolate and stone fruit, with a slightly fruity finish lingering on the palate.

For those in the know: SCA score of 84.25.

FAQ
Customer Questions
What is the roast date?
The roast date of Café du Jour's coffee beans is usually a maximum of four weeks before dispatch. This means that the coffee beans are generally no older than four weeks when they arrive at your door. Many people ask if coffee beans are already too old after three weeks. The answer to that is: no. Freshly roasted coffee actually reaches its best flavour after a few weeks. During roasting, carbon dioxide (CO₂) is created inside the coffee beans, which can mask the taste at first. That is why coffee is at its best between one and four weeks after roasting. After roasting, the beans are immediately packed in special coffee bags with a one-way valve. This valve allows CO₂ to escape without letting oxygen in, so the aromas are preserved and the coffee remains fresh. This way, you can count on an optimally fresh product with a full flavour!
What are the main flavour characteristics of these Rwanda speciality 100% arabica coffee beans?
This coffee is characterised by a perfect balance between intensity and subtlety. You will taste chocolate and earthy notes, combined with a light spiciness. In the aftertaste, a delicate fruitiness emerges, with a hint of berries and blackberries instead of citrus. The flavour remains clearly present even in a cappuccino, with a touch of chocolate.
What is the ideal grind size and brewing method for these coffee beans?
These coffee beans can be ground slightly coarser than other beans in our range, especially if you are using an espresso machine (such as a Sage Barista Express). For espresso, a brewing time of 25 seconds for 30 ml is recommended. Due to the balanced flavours, the bean is suitable for both espresso and cappuccino, but for larger cappuccinos a slightly stronger bean may be desirable.
Does the flavour of this coffee hold up well in milk-based drinks such as cappuccino?
Yes, this coffee is excellent in milk-based drinks such as cappuccino. The characteristic chocolate and fruit notes are well preserved, creating an experience as if you are enjoying a piece of chocolate with your coffee. However, we recommend using smaller cups (for example, 160ml) for the best flavour balance.
