Lavazza coffee: how the range is organised
Lavazza sells its coffee in several lines, and the name on the bag tells you a lot. Blends with crema in the name, such as Caffè Crema Classico and Caffè Crema Dolce, point towards a longer cup: a caffè crema, black or with a little milk. Blends with espresso in the name, such as Espresso Italiano, Espresso Cremoso and Espresso Aromatico, are built for a short, concentrated cup and for milk drinks. The Espresso Barista and Expert blends come in the same 1 kg bags and suit bean-to-cup machines as well as an espresso machine with a separate grinder.

Strong, creamy or soft?
Strong
If you like a firm espresso, or a cappuccino that still tastes clearly of coffee, start with Espresso Barista Intenso or Espresso Italiano. Expert Gusto Forte and Crema e Gusto Espresso Forte carry forte, Italian for strong, in their names.
Creamy and balanced
Crema e Aroma and Super Crema Espresso sit in the middle: enough body for a milk drink, soft enough to drink black. The range also includes Expert Crema & Aroma and Blue Line Crema e Aroma.
Soft and aromatic
Qualità Oro and Espresso Barista Gran Crema are gentler, with more aroma than bite. Caffè Crema Dolce and Caffè Crema Barista Delicato say the same with their names: dolce means sweet, delicato delicate.
Decaf and ground Lavazza
Most Lavazza coffee here is sold as whole beans. For decaf there is Decaf My Easy Day Classico as beans in a 500 g bag, and Lavazza DEK Classico as ground coffee in a 250 g pack. Lavazza Caffè Espresso is also available ground in 250 g, for a moka pot or an espresso machine with a portafilter.

With more than twenty blends to choose from, tasting side by side is the quickest way to find your favourite. The Lavazza Crema sample pack holds four 1 kg bags, the Barista sample pack three and the Gold sample package two.
Lavazza in a bean-to-cup machine
When you switch to a new Lavazza blend, give the machine two or three cups before you judge the taste. If the coffee runs fast and tastes thin or sour, set the grinder one step finer; if it drips slowly and tastes bitter, one step coarser. A blend such as Crema e Aroma usually needs a slightly different setting from a stronger espresso blend.
