What is matcha tea?

Matcha tea, unlike ordinary green tea, is made by grinding whole tea leaves into a fine powder, allowing you to get the full nutrients from the leaves. The unique taste of matcha, also referred to as the fifth taste umami, comes out best when you have it as a matcha latte. With a perfect amount of matcha powder whisked with milk to a silky smooth foam, this is the ultimate treat for those who love their matcha.

With its rich flavour, vivid green colour, and fine texture, our matcha is perfect for making matcha lattes, matcha cakes, or simply enjoying a soothing cup of hot matcha tea.

Matcha powder

Matcha powder is made from ground green tea leaves. It's often used to make matcha tea but can also be added to smoothies, yoghurt, and even cakes. The powder is rich in antioxidants and contains caffeine, making it a great substitute for coffee. Our matcha powder is of high quality. It comes in different sizes and prices, depending on the quality.

Matcha tea

Matcha tea is made by mixing matcha powder with hot water. Because the whole leaf is consumed, matcha tea contains more antioxidants than regular green tea.

Disadvantages of matcha tea

  • Can cause caffeine sensitivity: Although matcha releases caffeine more gradually than coffee, some people may still be sensitive to caffeine, leading to feelings of nervousness, insomnia, or a racing heart.
  • Can be pricey: High-quality matcha tea can be dear, especially top-tier ceremonial matcha, which can lead to higher expenses for regular matcha enthusiasts.
  • May need some getting used to: The flavour of matcha tea may take some getting accustomed to because of its unique umami taste and bright green colour, which might require an adjustment period for newcomers.
  • Can cause stomach upset: For some, the high amount of caffeine and tannins in matcha tea can cause stomach issues, especially if consumed on an empty stomach.

It’s important to weigh the benefits and drawbacks of matcha tea to see if it suits your personal health needs and preferences.

Matcha tea accessories

Besides high-quality matcha powder and green tea, we also offer a range of handy accessories to help you prepare the perfect cup of matcha tea. Here are some of our favourite matcha accessories:

  • Matcha bamboo whisk: Our authentic matcha bamboo whisk, known as a "chasen", is specially crafted to whisk matcha tea into a silky smooth foam. Made from high-quality bamboo, this whisk ensures an even mix of matcha powder and water, so you can enjoy a perfect cup of matcha latte every time.
  • Matcha bowl: Our traditional matcha bowl, also known as a "chawan", is the ideal bowl for preparing and serving matcha tea. Made from durable ceramic, this bowl provides ample space to blend matcha powder and water into a smooth, bright green matcha drink.
  • Matcha spoon: Our matcha spoon, also called a "chashaku", is specially designed to measure out the perfect amount of matcha powder for a single cup of matcha tea.

With these matcha accessories, making matcha tea becomes a simple and enjoyable task. Whether you're an experienced matcha drinker or just starting to explore this delightful tea, our accessories will help you create the perfect matcha to suit your tastes and preferences.

What is the difference between green tea and matcha tea?

The difference between matcha tea and green tea lies in their processing and preparation, resulting in distinct flavours and properties. Matcha tea, made from ground green tea leaves of the tea plant Camellia sinensis, is known for its bright green colour and umami taste. This is because the entire tea leaf is ground into a fine powder, yielding an intense flavour and high antioxidant content.

Green tea, on the other hand, is traditionally brewed by steeping the tea leaves in hot water, which extracts the flavour and nutrients. Although green tea also comes from the same tea plant as matcha, it has a more subtle flavour and lighter colour. Green tea is available in various types and can be enjoyed as a hot drink or as a refreshing iced tea.

The difference in preparation also affects caffeine levels and release. Matcha tea, because the whole leaf is consumed, contains more caffeine than traditional green tea.
