What is in the matcha kit

Everything needed to make matcha is packed together here: a Hana ceramic bowl (Ø 13 cm, H 7 cm), a bamboo whisk, a bamboo spoon, a holder for the whisk, and a 50 g tin of Classic Matcha that reseals between uses. Add hot water and you can make your first bowl the day it arrives, which is what makes this a sensible present as well as a way to start yourself off. The whole set comes in a cardboard gift box.

What each piece is for

The bowl is wide and shallow rather than mug-shaped, so the whisk has room to move across the base without the tea going over the rim. The bamboo whisk carries dozens of fine tines: they break up the powder and work air into it, which is what builds the fine foam on the surface. The bamboo spoon takes a consistent scoop, so a bowl you liked is easy to repeat. The holder keeps the tines curved and apart while the whisk dries, which stops them splaying out of shape.

How to make a bowl

Put one or two scoops of matcha in the bowl and add a little water at around 80 °C — below boiling, which suits the powder better. Whisk briskly in a W shape until the surface is evenly frothy, then top up with water to taste. Matcha is whole leaf ground to a powder, so nothing is strained out and nothing is left behind: you drink the leaf, whisked into suspension. Less water gives a thicker, more concentrated bowl, more water a lighter one, and the same two scoops whisk just as well into hot milk.

FAQ
Customer Questions
Is the matcha tin in the Matcha starter set Hana sealed?

We fill the tins with matcha ourselves, so they are not sealed. There is a sticker on top of the tin and it can sometimes come loose during transport.

We never reuse a tin that has been returned, so the matcha in your starter set has never been in another customer's hands. If something is not right after all, please let us know.

What is in the Matcha starter set Hana?

This starter set contains a ceramic matcha bowl type Hana of Ø13 cm by H7 cm, a bamboo matcha whisk, a bamboo matcha scoop, a whisk holder and 50 grams of classic matcha in a resealable tin.

Everything comes together in a luxury cardboard gift box, so you can get started right away or give the set as a present. It is a fixed composition that you cannot adjust yourself.

How many cups of matcha can you make with the 50 grams from the Hana starter set?

For a cup of matcha, allow around 1.5 to 2 grams of powder, which is about a teaspoon. So with the 50 grams from this starter set you can make around 25 to 33 cups.

Close the tin well after use and store it dry, dark and cool, so that the colour and the flavour of the matcha are preserved.

How do you make matcha with the whisk and scoop from the Hana starter set?

Put about 1.5 to 2 grams of matcha into the bowl with the bamboo scoop and pour in a small splash of water at around 80 degrees. Whisk with the bamboo whisk in a quick W motion until the lumps are gone and a fine layer of foam sits on top.

Then top up with hot water or with warm milk for a matcha latte. You do not need to filter matcha; the powder is part of the drink. Boiling water quickly makes matcha bitter.

How do you clean the bamboo matcha whisk from the Hana starter set?

Rinse the whisk with warm water immediately after use and do not use any washing-up liquid. Then leave it to dry on the whisk holder supplied, so that the prongs keep their round shape.

We advise against putting the whisk, the scoop and the holder in the dishwasher, because it can damage the bamboo. Wash the bowl by hand with a soft sponge.
