Monsooned? I can hear your brain making overtime, monsooned? Yes, monsooned. about twohunderd years ago it took about six months to travel from Europe to India. The trip was made in big wooden ships. If the ships travelled during the monsoon season the moisture gave the coffee beans a new unique taste. The moist and constantly changing weather gave us a new form of coffee; spicy, creamy and very powerful.
present-day the transport of coffee is much quicker and most beans are transported in shipping containers. That is why we try to copy the process just as all those years ago. The monsoon winds blow through the warehouses on the coast of Malabar. During this process the beans are flipped over daily to avoid fungus.
The result? A sweet, creamy, powerfull coffee with tones of spicy chocolate and nuts.
The India Monsooned Malabar is a special coffee. The origin of this coffee is found in the 17th century. During these times raw coffee beans came from india in wooden ships. This was a heavy trip and took over six months, past cape the good hope towards europe. During the trip the raw coffee beans were exsposed to the moist monsoon conditions.
What happened? The beans changed colour, size, texture and taste. The coffee from india was even more spicy and creamy than the people were used too. When modern types of transport arrived and beter ways of protecting transport the coffee beans lost their unique charachter.
But not to fear. Men discovered a way of recreating these unique traits of the monsoon coffee. During the monsoon season the beans are stored in warehouses at the Malabar coast. The beans are stored here for the original six months and the warehouses remain open for the moist monsoon winds to blow through.
