One of the newest gems in our range, well, our newest bean. Café du Jour presents the India Monsooned Malabar. A powerful, spicy coffee that’s roasted a bit darker than your usual Café du Jour coffee.

Monsooned? I can almost hear you wondering, monsooned? Yes, monsooned. About two hundred years ago, it took around six months to travel from Europe to India. The journey was made on big wooden ships. If the ships travelled during the monsoon season, the moisture gave the coffee beans a unique new taste. The damp and constantly changing weather gave us a new form of coffee; spicy, creamy and very powerful.

Nowadays, the transport of coffee is much quicker, and most beans are shipped in containers. That’s why we try to replicate the process just like in the old days. The monsoon winds blow through the warehouses on the coast of Malabar. During this process, the beans are turned over daily to prevent any fungus.

The result? A sweet, creamy, powerful coffee with notes of spicy chocolate and nuts.

Monsooned? I can almost hear the cogs turning in your head, monsooned? Yes, monsooned. Around two hundred years ago, it took about six months to travel from Europe to India. FAQ
Customer Questions
What is the roast date?
The roast date of Café du Jour's coffee beans is usually a maximum of four weeks before dispatch. This means that the coffee beans are generally no older than four weeks when they arrive at your door. Many people ask if coffee beans are already too old after three weeks. The answer to that is: no. Freshly roasted coffee actually reaches its best flavour after a few weeks. During roasting, carbon dioxide (CO₂) is created inside the coffee beans, which can mask the taste at first. That is why coffee is at its best between one and four weeks after roasting. After roasting, the beans are immediately packed in special coffee bags with a one-way valve. This valve allows CO₂ to escape without letting oxygen in, so the aromas are preserved and the coffee remains fresh. This way, you can count on an optimally fresh product with a full flavour!
How does the Monsooned Malabar distinguish itself from other coffee varieties (and also from Indian coffee at other roasters)?
What makes this coffee special is the unique monsoon process: the green beans are exposed to humid monsoon winds for months, giving them their characteristic full, smooth and spicy flavour. Our roastmaster roasts in small batches and just a little darker for extra strength. Please note: this may result in slight differences compared to other roasters of the same bean; some customers find our version just a bit stronger or with a deeper, more smoky taste.
What does Monsooned Malabar coffee taste like and what can I expect from its intensity?
Our Monsooned Malabar has a powerful, full-bodied and spicy flavour with pronounced notes of dark chocolate and nuts. The coffee is bold, sometimes with a slight smokiness, but is experienced by most enthusiasts as creamy, velvety and intense (intensity 10). Thanks to the special monsoon process, this bean can have a unique, slightly ‘earthy’ and aromatic taste that is appreciated by lovers of strong espressos as well as creamy milk-based coffees.
Are the Monsooned Malabar beans suitable for espresso, cappuccino or filter coffee?
These beans are highly versatile: their powerful flavour and rich crema make them particularly suitable for espresso, cappuccino, flat white and latte macchiato. Their flavour holds up well, especially in milk-based drinks. In addition, there are customers who thoroughly enjoy using these beans for filter coffee or lungo: expect a full-bodied, smooth and characterful cup.
