The Hario V60 dripper: size and material
The V60 is a cone-shaped dripper with spiral ribs on the inside and one large opening at the bottom. Because the water can run through freely, your pour controls the result: pour slowly for a fuller cup, faster for a lighter one. That is why people who like to fine-tune their filter coffee choose it.
- Size 01 brews one or two cups. Pair it with size 01 filters and the V60 coffee server size 01/450 ml.
- Size 02 brews up to four cups. Pair it with size 02 filters and the V60 coffee server size 02/700 ml.
The material mostly affects heat and handling. Plastic is light, hard to break and doesn't draw much heat from the water, which makes it an easy starting point. Porcelain looks good and keeps the temperature steady once you've warmed it with hot water. Glass lets you watch the brew. We stock plastic drippers in white, red and transparent, porcelain in white and red, and glass versions with a black holder.
Filters
V60 paper filters come in packs of 100, in size 01 and 02, white or brown. White filters are bleached and taste the most neutral; brown filters are unbleached. Rinse either kind with hot water before brewing: that removes the paper taste and warms up the dripper and server.
Complete set, kettles and scale
New to pour-over? The Hario V60 complete set combines a dripper, a server, filters and a measuring spoon. Add a kettle with a narrow spout for a controlled pour: the Buono electric kettle holds 0.8 litre, and the V60 kettle with adjustable temperature (EVT-80) lets you set the water temperature, which helps with lighter roasts. The V60 Precision Scale weighs coffee and water as you brew, so you can repeat a recipe that works.
Hand grinders
Pour-over needs an even, medium grind, ground just before brewing. Hario has two hand grinders with ceramic burrs: the compact Mini Slim Plus, handy for one or two cups and for travel, and the larger Skerton N for more coffee at a time.
Cold brew and iced coffee
- Cold brew: coarse coffee steeps in cold water in the fridge for several hours. The Mizudashi pot comes in 600 ml and 1000 ml; the Filter-in Coffee Bottle, 750 ml does the same in a bottle you can pour from. The result is smooth and low in acidity.
- Iced coffee: hot coffee brewed straight onto ice, for a lighter, brighter glass than cold brew. The V60 Iced Coffee Maker (glass, 700 ml) and the V60 Fretta are made for this.
A simple V60 recipe to start
- Use about 15 g of medium-ground coffee for 250 ml of water just off the boil.
- Rinse the filter, add the coffee and pour just enough water to wet it. Let it bloom for 30 seconds.
- Pour the rest in slow circles, keeping the water level steady. Aim for a total brewing time of 2.5 to 3 minutes.
- Too bitter? Grind a little coarser. Sour or thin? Grind finer.
