This is the V60 in its most practical form: the same cone, moulded in red plastic rather than glass or ceramic. Plastic is light, it survives a knock against the sink and it does not get hot while you pour, so less heat is drawn out of the water on its way through. It has no effect on the taste of the coffee, and the colour makes it easy to spot on a busy worktop.

The shape is the control

The dripper takes its name from the 60 degree angle of the cone. A large hole sits at the tip and spiral ribs run up the inner wall, and between them they hand you the brew. Change the speed of your pour or the coarseness of your grind and you change the brewing time and the extraction with it. Pour slowly or grind finer for a heavier, sweeter cup; speed up or go coarser for something lighter and brighter.

Size 01: one cup or two

Size 01 is the smaller of the two everyday V60 sizes and is suitable for 1 to 2 cups at a time. It stands 8.2 cm high and measures 11.5 cm across, with a diameter of 10 cm, so it sits on a mug without taking over the worktop. Use the official Hario V60 filters in size 01: the holder tapers to a point, so a size 02 filter is too large, will not sit properly and lets water slip past the coffee instead of through it.
