Julius Meinl Coffee
Serving as the company logo since its beginning, the famous Julius Meinl Mohr is an iconic symbol recognised the world over. The logo features a young man wearing a fez (a red hat with a tassel) and pays homage to the Turkish Ottoman Empire's historical influence in bringing coffee to Vienna in 1683. This logo stands as the international trademark of Julius Meinl Coffee. The brand holds a strong position in Europe, especially in its homeland of Austria, and is well established abroad too.
Founded in 1862, Julius Meinl is among the oldest coffee roasters globally and has maintained its reputation as a supplier of high-quality coffees and teas to this day. Their extensive expertise in sourcing green coffee, building long-term relationships with coffee farmers, diligent bean selection by family members, and typical Viennese roasting by their coffee specialists all contribute to delivering the perfect cup of coffee.
Since its founding in Vienna, Austria, the fifth generation of the Meinl family remains actively involved in the business today!
The History of Julius Meinl
In 1862, Julius Meinl opened a spice shop in the heart of Vienna where he sold green coffee beans, cocoa, tea, spices, rice, and sugar. The business did grand and grew swiftly. By 1877, Julius Meinl II transformed coffee roasting with a process he crafted himself, preventing coffee beans from coming into contact with coal gases, thus retaining their full natural aroma without any aftertaste. These were the first true Julius Meinl coffee beans.
The growth of Meinl coffee
With this monumental change, the Meinl family business saw a real growth spurt. Sales of Julius Meinl coffee beans soon outgrew a single shop, prompting the establishment of a head office. This moved in 1912 to what's now called Julius Meinl Gasse (a street later named after Julius Meinl II) in Vienna's 16th district, where it remains. By 1913, Julius Meinl was hailed as the largest coffee roaster in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and also the largest importer of coffee and tea in Central Europe, which had a population of some 50 million people!
The first shop
In the early 1950s, Julius Meinl opened a flagship store in Vienna. To this day, this shop is the top destination for fine food in Vienna. As they soared to become the largest coffee roaster in Central Europe, the word about Julius Meinl Coffee spread quickly. In 2002, they opened their first coffee house in Chicago. Once they got the hang of setting up coffee houses, they launched the largest coffee house in the world in 2008! It was located among the natural history and art museums in Vienna during the European football championship. In 2009, they introduced Julius Meinl's 1862 PREMIUM coffee for the hospitality industry. Now, you can enjoy PREMIUM Julius Meinl coffee beans in restaurants. The company has been around for over 150 years and continues to grow.
