The V60 cone

The Hario V60 is a cone-shaped pour-over dripper, and the name describes the shape: the walls run down at a 60-degree angle to a single large opening at the tip. Spiral ribs stand between the paper and the cone so water can keep moving down the sides instead of stalling against the wall. The wide opening is the point of the design — the dripper does not meter the flow for you, your pour does. Get the pour right and the same cone will give you a light, clean cup or a heavier one, which is why it is used at home and behind the counter alike.

Size 01, in white plastic

This is the 01, the smallest size, made for one to two cups. Plastic is the version most people end up brewing with day to day: it weighs almost nothing, it survives being knocked about, and unlike a cold ceramic or glass cone it barely draws any heat out of the water on its way through.

Filters

Only Hario V60 size 01 papers fit this dripper. The 02 papers are cut for the larger cone and will not sit properly in it. We stock them in white and brown, sold separately.

Brewing with it

Sit the dripper on a mug or a carafe, drop the paper in and rinse it through with hot water first: that washes the paper taste out and warms everything up. Add medium-fine ground coffee, wet it with a little water and give it half a minute to bloom, then pour the rest in slow circles from the middle outwards. Around three minutes from the first pour to the last drip is a sensible place to start, and from there you adjust the grind rather than the recipe.
