The small V60 in borosilicate glass with a black holder. Size 01 is built for 1 to 2 cups, roughly 200 to 350 ml a brew, which suits anyone who mostly makes coffee for themselves or for two. Glass is taste neutral and lets you follow the bloom and the drawdown, and the 60 degree cone with its ribbed inner wall keeps the water moving evenly through the bed. Dishwasher safe.

Details

The small V60, in glass

Size 01 is the compact Hario V60: 1 to 2 cups a brew, roughly 200 to 350 ml, which is the right amount for one person or two. This version is borosilicate glass in a black holder. Glass takes on no flavour and gives none back, and because you can see straight through it you can follow the bloom and the drawdown rather than guess at them.

Glass, plastic or porcelain?

All three brew the same coffee. The 60 degree angle, the ribs on the inner wall and the single wide hole in the tip are identical, and only the material changes. Glass is heat-resistant, neutral in taste and good to look at. Plastic is lighter and harder to break, so that is the one you pack. Porcelain holds heat longest, as long as you warm it through first. This glass V60 is dishwasher safe, though a rinse under the tap is usually quicker.

Brewing with the size 01

A workable starting point is 60 grams of coffee per litre of water, so about 12 to 15 grams for a 200 to 250 ml cup. Grind medium fine, a shade coarser than table salt, and use water at 92 to 96 degrees. Fold a size 01 filter into the cone, rinse it with hot water and pour that water away. Add the coffee, wet it with about twice its weight in water and let it bloom for 30 to 45 seconds, then top up in slow circles. Reckon on two to three minutes in total; if it runs through faster than that, grind one step finer.

Filters and what goes with it

  • Material: borosilicate glass with a black holder
  • Size: 01, for 1 to 2 cups
  • Filters: V60 paper filters in size 01, white (VCF-01-100W) or unbleached brown (VCF-01-100M), 100 per pack
  • Size 02 filters do not fit: they crumple against the rim and the water runs past the coffee
  • Dishwasher safe
  • A gooseneck kettle makes the pour easier to control
  • A coffee scale keeps the ratio the same every time

FAQ
Customer Questions
Which coffee filters fit the Hario V60 dripper size 01?

You need V60 paper filters in size 01, the smaller cone that fits this dripper exactly. Size 02 filters are too big: they crumple against the rim and the water runs past the coffee instead of through it.

At Café du Jour you will find them as Hario V60 coffee filters size 01 in white (VCF-01-100W) and in unbleached brown (VCF-01-100M), both in packs of 100. White tastes neutral, brown is unbleached; rinse the filter with hot water first and you will not taste any paper. Fold over the seam of the filter before you place it in the Hario V60 dripper in black glass, size 01.

How many cups does the Hario V60 size 01 make?

Size 01 is the small V60 and it is built for 1 to 2 cups, roughly 200 to 350 ml per brew. Perfect if you usually make coffee for yourself or for two.

If you regularly brew for three or four people, size 02 is the better choice. It is wider and holds a bigger coffee bed, so you can use more coffee without the filter overflowing. Keep in mind that each size has its own filters: this Hario V60 dripper in black glass, size 01, takes size 01 filters. Need more coffee in one go? Simply brew two rounds back to back, it is quicker than you think.

Can you close off the flow of the Hario V60 dripper?

No, the V60 has one large hole in the tip that always stays open. There is no valve or plug to stop the flow, and that is deliberate: with this method the water runs through the coffee bed continuously.

You control the speed in a different way. Grind your coffee a little finer or coarser and pour in slow, steady circles. The paper filter does not seal the wall either, because the ribs on the inside deliberately leave room for air to escape. If you want your coffee to steep first and drain afterwards, a French press or an immersion brewer suits you better than the Hario V60.

What is the difference between the glass, plastic and porcelain Hario V60 dripper?

All three brew exactly the same coffee: the 60-degree angle, the ribs on the inside and the large hole in the tip are identical. The difference is purely in the material.

  • Glass: heatproof, taste-neutral and you can watch the brew happen. This version sits in a black holder.
  • Plastic: the lightest and least fragile option, handy to take with you.
  • Porcelain: the heaviest and it holds heat longest, as long as you preheat it with hot water.

Glass and porcelain feel more premium, plastic is simply practical. The glass Hario V60 is dishwasher safe, although a quick rinse under the tap is usually just as fast.

How do you brew coffee with the Hario V60?

As a guideline, use about 60 grams of coffee per litre of water, so roughly 12 to 15 grams for 200 to 250 ml in size 01. Grind medium fine (a touch coarser than table salt) and use water at around 92 to 96 degrees.

Put a size 01 V60 filter in the dripper, rinse it with hot water and pour that rinse water away. Add the coffee, pour on about twice the coffee weight in water and let it bloom for 30 to 45 seconds. Then top up in slow circles until you reach your final weight. Expect 2 to 3 minutes in total. If it drains too quickly, grind one step finer.
