Single-origin Arabica from the Aceh highlands of Sumatra, grown between 1,100 and 1,600 metres and medium roasted. It is gently spicy, as Indonesian coffees tend to be, with light cocoa underneath and a tangy acidity that keeps it lively. It gives most of itself as a slow brew — Chemex, cafetière or filter. This coffee was previously sold under the name Raja Gayo.

Details

Grown in Aceh

This Arabica comes from the central part of Aceh province on Sumatra, where it grows between 1,100 and 1,600 metres. It is not estate coffee: it comes from smallholders, for whom coffee is the main crop.

Only ripe red cherries are picked, and they are picked by hand. They are pulped the same day, laid out to dry, and then taken to one of the local cooperatives for processing and export.

In the cup

Gently spicy, the way Indonesian coffees usually are, with light cocoa behind it and a tangy acidity that stops it sitting heavy. The medium roast is what holds that balance. On our scale it is 8 out of 13.

It is at its best as a slow brew: a Chemex, a cafetière or a quick filter. Pulled as espresso the spice sharpens and the acidity becomes a good deal more noticeable, which suits some people and not others.

Good to know

Sold as whole beans in 250 g, 500 g and 1 kg, in a resealable bag with a one-way valve, and the roasting date is printed on the label. This coffee was previously sold under the name Raja Gayo.

FAQ
Customer Questions
What does the Café du Jour Sumatra coffee taste like?

This Sumatra is medium roasted and has a spicy character, like many Indonesian coffees, with light hints of cocoa. It is bold and has a noticeable acidity. We rate the intensity as 8 out of 13, which means powerful. If you are looking for a mild, low-acidity coffee, this single origin is not the most obvious choice.

What can I do if the Sumatra coffee tastes too sour to me?

The acidity is part of this coffee and comes out most strongly when you brew it as espresso. We recommend trying it as slow coffee from the Chemex, the French press or the filter, which keeps the acidity more in the background. If you grind yourself, it helps to grind a little finer, use a slightly higher dose and hotter water: that tones down the sour notes. For filter and French press, allow around 5 to 8 grams per cup.

Is the Café du Jour Sumatra the same coffee as the Raja Gayo?

Yes. This coffee was previously available under the name Raja Gayo and is now called Café du Jour 100% arabica Sumatra. It is the same 100% arabica from the central part of the province of Aceh on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, grown at 1100 to 1600 metres altitude. Only the name has changed.

Which brewing method is the Sumatra coffee suitable for?

We think this Sumatra is at its best as slow coffee from the Chemex, the French press or the filter. You can also use it for espresso and cappuccino, although it then becomes a little bolder and the acidity comes out more. Make sure you use the right grind for your machine: whole beans for a bean to cup machine, filter grind for a pour over filter and espresso grind for an espresso machine. Filter grind and espresso grind are not interchangeable.

How fresh are the Sumatra coffee beans and how do I store them?

We roast this coffee in small batches and top up weekly, so the roast date is always recent. You will find that date on the label of the bag and when it is shipped the coffee is never older than four weeks. The bag is resealable and has a valve: gases can escape, air cannot get in, so the bag does not feel vacuum packed. Store the coffee cool, dark and well sealed and not in the fridge. Freshly roasted beans need five to seven days of degassing before they are at their best.
