A matcha whisk: the traditional Japanese tool for preparing matcha. Stir matcha powder with a spoon, a fork or a metal whisk and you will nearly always be left with lumps. This whisk breaks them up and turns the powder into a smooth drink with a light foam on top. With 80 bristles working through the matcha at once, it gets there quickly.

Details

This is a matcha whisk, also sold as a matcha beater or matcha tea brush. Whisks like this are the traditional Japanese tool for preparing matcha, and it does one job well: turning matcha powder into a smooth, frothy drink without lumps. Its head is made up of 80 bristles.

Why not just use a spoon?

Matcha powder clumps easily. A spoon or fork mostly pushes those clumps around, and a metal whisk doesn't do much better, so you end up with little pockets of dry powder in your drink. The bristles of a matcha whisk work through the powder instead of around it, breaking up the lumps and mixing everything evenly.

A light foam, quickly

Besides getting rid of lumps, the whisk beats air into the matcha. That is what gives a well-made matcha its fine layer of foam. With 80 bristles moving through the liquid together, you get there quickly, so there is less whisking before your matcha is ready.

If you drink matcha regularly and are tired of gritty, lumpy cups, this is the simple fix.

FAQ
Customer Questions
Where is this matcha whisk made and what material is it made of?

This matcha tea whisk is made of bamboo. We checked with our supplier: our matcha whisks and bamboo matcha spoons are made in China.

The whisk follows the classic model with 80 fine prongs, as has been used in Japan for centuries to whisk matcha.

How do you use the matcha whisk with 80 prongs?

Put about 1.5 to 2 grams of matcha, which is roughly a teaspoon, in a matcha bowl and pour in a small splash of water at about 80 degrees. Whisk with the matcha whisk in a quick W motion from your wrist until the lumps are gone and a fine layer of foam forms.

Then top up with hot water or with warm milk for a matcha latte. Matcha does not need to be sieved or filtered, you simply drink the powder along with it.

How do I clean the bamboo matcha whisk and how do I store it?

Rinse the whisk with warm water straight after use and do not use any washing up liquid. Shake the water out and let it air dry, preferably upright on a whisk holder so the prongs keep their round shape.

We advise against putting the matcha whisk in the dishwasher and against ever storing it while damp, because that can damage the bamboo or make it go mouldy.

Why does this matcha whisk have 80 prongs?

The more prongs a matcha whisk has, the faster the powder dissolves and the finer the foam becomes. With the 80 prongs of this whisk you get the lumps out quickly and swiftly whisk up a creamy layer of foam on your matcha.

Can I also mix matcha with a fork, spoon or metal whisk?

That does not work well. With a fork, spoon or metal whisk you almost always end up with lumps, because they do not distribute the fine powder through the water.

The fine bamboo prongs of this matcha whisk do break up the lumps and at the same time bring air into the tea, which gives you the characteristic layer of foam.
