The Wasabi matcha set puts the four tools you need for whisking matcha in one box: a porcelain bowl of 13 cm across and 7 cm high, a bamboo whisk (chasen), a bamboo scoop (chashaku) and a stand for the whisk to dry on. Made in Japan and packed in a cardboard gift box. Wasabi is the name of the decoration, not an ingredient, and matcha powder is ordered separately.
Details

What is in the box

The Wasabi matcha set gathers the tools for traditional matcha in one gift box. The bowl is porcelain, 13 cm across and 7 cm high, wide enough to swing a whisk in without splashing. With it come a bamboo whisk (chasen), a bamboo scoop (chashaku) and a holder for the whisk to dry on. The set is made in Japan and sits in the Café du Jour tea accessories range. Wasabi is the name of the decoration on the bowl rather than an ingredient, and matcha powder is not included, so you pick that yourself.

Whisking matcha with it

Scoop about two measures of matcha into the bowl, pour over 60 to 70 ml of water at around 80°C and whisk briskly in a W motion until a fine foam forms on top. Boiling water turns matcha bitter, so let the kettle stand for a minute first. Sifting is not required, though it does break up lumps in powder that has been open a while. For a latte, whisk this base and top it up with warm or cold milk.

Looking after it

Rest the whisk in warm water before use so the prongs soften. Rinse it without soap afterwards and stand it on the holder to dry, which keeps its round shape. Wash the bowl by hand in warm water with a mild detergent and dry it straight away; a long hot dishwasher cycle dulls the decoration over time. The bamboo pieces never go in the dishwasher or the microwave.

FAQ
Customer Questions
What is included in the Wasabi matcha set?

This matcha set holds everything you need to whisk your own matcha: a ceramic bowl 13 cm in diameter and 7 cm high, a bamboo matcha whisk (chasen), a bamboo matcha scoop (chashaku) and a whisk holder to store the whisk on.

The set is made in Japan, has a decorated finish and arrives in a luxurious-looking cardboard gift box. That makes it a lovely present, although it is just as nice to treat yourself. Do note that Wasabi is the name of the colour and finish of this set, so no actual wasabi is involved. Matcha powder is not included either; you order that separately.

Is matcha tea included with this matcha set?

No, matcha powder is not part of this set. You get the ceramic bowl, the bamboo whisk, the bamboo scoop and the whisk holder, so you can pick the matcha you like best yourself.

In our range you will find loose matcha powder from Japan for traditional preparation, plus a matcha latte mix if you prefer something milder and sweeter. For whisking with this set, go for the pure powder, since the latte mix is mainly meant for milk drinks. Would you rather have everything in one go? Have a look to see whether the matcha starter set including tea is in stock. Not sure which matcha suits you? Just send us a message.

How do you prepare matcha with this set?

Add about 1 to 2 grams of matcha to the bowl (roughly two scoops with the bamboo scoop), pour in 60 to 70 ml of water at around 80 degrees and whisk with the bamboo whisk in a quick W motion until a fine layer of foam appears.

Sifting is not required, although it does help to avoid lumps if your powder has been open for a while. For a matcha latte, whisk this base first and then top it up with warm or cold milk. Avoid boiling water, because that turns your matcha bitter very quickly.

Is the matcha bowl dishwasher and microwave safe?

We recommend washing the bowl by hand in warm water with a mild detergent and drying it right away. The bowl is decorated ceramic from Japan, and a long, hot dishwasher cycle can dull the decoration over time.

We would also keep this bowl out of the microwave. You heat the water separately anyway and only pour it over the matcha afterwards. The bamboo whisk, the bamboo scoop and the whisk holder should never go in the dishwasher or the microwave, because bamboo discolours and splits very quickly.

Which bamboo whisk (chasen) is included and how do you look after it?

The set comes with a traditional bamboo matcha whisk (chasen) with lots of thin, finely cut prongs, exactly what you need to whisk matcha light and frothy. A chasen is cut by hand from a single piece of bamboo, so the exact number of prongs can differ slightly from one whisk to the next. Would you like to know the precise number for your whisk? Send us a message and we will check it for you.

Before use, rest the whisk in warm water for a moment so the prongs become supple. After whisking, rinse it under running water without soap and let it dry on the whisk holder that comes with the set. That keeps its round shape and makes it last a lot longer.
