Blend and roast

For Crema e Gusto Classico, Lavazza puts Arabica from South America together with Robusta from Southeast Asia and Africa. The Arabica carries the aroma and the sweetness, the Robusta the body and the crema. The roast is dark but controlled: it gives the blend its depth without tipping over into burnt bitterness, which is what makes it one of the more approachable Italian dark roasts.

In the cup

The flavour is led by pure cocoa, roasted nuts and dark chocolate, with subtle spicy accents underneath and a rounded, aromatic finish. As an espresso it comes out full and aromatic under a golden-brown crema. In cappuccino, latte macchiato and other milk drinks the chocolate note carries through the milk rather than disappearing into it, and as filter coffee the blend has enough body for a robust daily cup. Café du Jour rates it at 7 out of 13 for strength.

How it compares

Within the Lavazza range this is the one to reach for if you want a powerful, traditional Italian coffee. Next to Qualità Rossa it is a little spicier and the chocolate note is more intense, while staying easy enough to drink every day.
