Caffè Hausbrandt Qualità Rossa

Qualità Rossa is the red-label blend in the Hausbrandt range: a blend of Arabica and Robusta, sold here as whole beans in a 1 kg bag. It is an everyday Italian-style house coffee rather than a single-origin to sit and study — steady, rounded and at home in almost any machine.

In the cup

The Arabica carries the aroma and the sweeter side of the flavour; the Robusta gives the cup its body, a thicker crema and a firmer finish. At 7 out of 13 on our strength scale it sits in the middle of the range — enough backbone to come through milk, not so much that it turns harsh when you drink it black. If pure Arabica espresso tastes thin to you and a dark Italian bar blend tastes burnt, this is the ground in between.

Brewing it

These are whole beans, so you need a grinder or a bean-to-cup machine. Rossa is a genuine all-rounder: a short espresso with a good head of crema, a cappuccino or latte that still tastes of coffee, or a coarser grind for filter and cafetière. It is the sort of blend you can keep in the hopper all day without wanting something different by the afternoon.
