Caffè Mauro Special Bar is a dark-roasted Arabica/Robusta blend, roasted and produced in Italy and sold here as whole beans in a 1 kg bag. The Robusta share gives the punch and a thick layer of crema, the Arabica the sweetness underneath. Expect a spicy, woody cup with a floral edge and an aftertaste of wood and tobacco, strong enough to hold its own under milk.

A dark Italian bar blend
Caffè Mauro Special Bar is the sort of coffee beans an Italian bar gets through in a morning: dark roasted, heavy in the cup and built for a short espresso. Arabica brings the sweetness, but it is the Robusta that does the work here, giving body, bite and a crema layer that sits thick on top. Roasting and production both happen in Italy.
How it tastes
Spicy and woody first, with a floral edge behind it and very little acidity. The aftertaste is the part you remember: wood and tobacco, long after the cup is empty. On the Café du Jour scale this is 10 out of 13, which we class as very strong, and the share of Robusta also means more caffeine than a 100% Arabica blend.
Machines and drinks
It runs in a bean-to-cup machine and in a portafilter machine, and it takes a moka pot or a percolator just as well. A straight espresso shows it at its clearest, but it was really made for milk: the coffee stays in front in a cappuccino, a latte or a lungo where a milder bean would vanish.
