Mövenpick caffè crema is a 100% Arabica blend of beans from Brazil, Colombia and Ethiopia, roasted in Germany and packed as whole beans in a 1 kg bag. Mövenpick calls it 'Der Himmlische', German for 'the heavenly'.

What is caffè crema?

Caffè crema is a longer espresso-style coffee of around 100 to 150 ml, topped with a golden-brown layer of crema. It has more volume than an espresso but keeps the aroma. The crema forms when hot water is forced through finely ground coffee under pressure, trapping the coffee's oils and gases. Fresh beans and a good extraction give a fuller crema.

Which machine?

These beans need grinding, so they suit a bean-to-cup machine, which grinds for you, or an espresso machine with a portafilter and a separate grinder. Grinding just before brewing brings out the full flavour of the 100% Arabica beans.

Brewing tips

1. For a classic caffè crema, brew a longer shot than a standard espresso: around 100 to 150 ml.
2. Adjust the grind until you get a steady, even flow and a golden crema.
3. For a cappuccino or latte macchiato, pull a shorter, stronger shot as your base.
4. Keep opened beans in an airtight container, away from light and heat.

Depending on how much coffee you use per cup, a 1 kg bag makes roughly 70 to 140 cups.
