Beautiful cocoa beans spring forth from the Lamas rainforest, creating an exceptional chocolate with a mix of floral and tangy fruit flavours.
The plantations are in the San Martin region, up in the north of Peru, dotted across the lush tropical landscape. This area is a refuge for endangered species, protected within Río Abiseo National Park and Cordillera Azul National Park. The crystal-clear lakes around, such as Lago Lindo and Lago Azul, are famed for their pure waters. The humidity of the Lamas rainforest is perfect for growing cocoa. Organically grown, these beans produce an outstanding chocolate with complex notes of flowers and tangy fruit.
About Oro Verde: The cooperative was established by fifty-six coffee farmers from Lamas province, San Martin region, on 7 December 1999. By 2020, it had grown to 1203 members. It brings together the two cultures of the (high) Andes and the dense rainforests of the Amazon. Three-quarters of the farmers are part of the indigenous Chanca Lamista, Quechua, or Kichwa from Lamas, while the rest have migrated to the area. The main crops are coffee and cocoa. Since 2010, there have been efforts to rejuvenate degraded areas under the motto "produce with happiness". Two million native trees have been planted to foster favourable conditions for the area's flora and fauna.
