How a blind filter works

A blind filter is a filter basket without holes. It goes into your portafilter in place of the normal basket; you lock the portafilter into the group and start the pump. With no way out through the bottom, the water is pushed back up through the shower screen and away through the machine's drain valve. That reverse flow is what clears the coffee oils and grounds that collect above the screen, where no brush reaches. Put a dose of espresso machine cleaning powder in the blind filter first and the same cycle cleans the group chemically as well as mechanically.

What it fits

This one is pressed from AISI 304 stainless steel — food-grade and corrosion-resistant, so hot water and cleaning powder do it no harm and it keeps its shape year after year. It suits any espresso machine that takes a 58 mm portafilter, including machines built around an E61 group head: ECM, Rancilio, Rocket, Vibiemme, Pavoni, Isomac, Cimbali, Fiorenzato, La Marzocco, Kees van der Westen, Faema and Expobar among them. If you are not certain, measure the inner diameter of the basket your machine currently uses; 58 mm is the most common size, but it is not the only one.
