Caffè Vergnano Decaffeinato

A decaffeinated espresso blend from the Italian roaster Caffè Vergnano, made with beans from Central and South America. The roast is a medium one, stopped well short of the dark, oily Italian style, which is why the cup tastes of chocolate and nuts rather than of char.

In the cup

Chocolate and nuts run right through it, with the roast sweetness a medium profile gives you and no bitter edge at the end. On our scale it sits at 7 out of 13, middle of the road, with enough body to come through milk. Pulled as an espresso it gives a full, round shot; in a cappuccino or a latte macchiato it does not vanish behind the foam.

When you would drink it

This is the bag you reach for after dinner, or for a second cup late in the afternoon when a caffeinated one would keep you up. The taste and the ritual stay the same; the caffeine is what has gone.

Grinding and brewing
