Espresso d'Oro is Dallmayr's dark roast for espresso: an Arabica and Robusta blend that pulls a dark shot with a solid crema. What you taste is chocolate and roasted nuts with a hint of cocoa behind them, depth rather than fruit or acidity. It is roasted and produced in Germany, from beans grown in India.

Grinding and brewing

These are whole beans, so grind to order: fine for an espresso machine, a little coarser for a moka pot or percolator. At 8 out of 13 on the Café du Jour strength scale, and 8 out of 10 on Dallmayr's own, it is firmly on the strong side without turning harsh, and the roast carries milk well - which is why it works as well in a cappuccino as it does as a straight shot.
