Café du Jour Speciality 100% Arabica Rwanda

A single-origin Rwandan Arabica from the Simbi washing station in the Huye district, in the south of the country, roasted by us. These beans take colour sooner than most, so we keep the roast temperature low and still stop at a medium roast. In the cup that gives chocolate and stone fruit, with a fruity finish. Cupped at an SCA score of 84.25.

Details

This is a single-origin Arabica from the Simbi washing station in the Huye district, in Rwanda's southern province, roasted by Café du Jour and sold as whole beans. It cups at an SCA score of 84.25.

What the score means

Speciality coffees are graded out of 100 by trained cuppers, and 80 is the line above which a lot counts as speciality rather than commodity coffee. At 84.25 this one sits comfortably above that line: a cleanly graded, carefully separated lot rather than something blended away into a supermarket tin.

Washed at Simbi

The name of the place describes the method. At a washing station the ripe cherry is pulped and the beans are fermented and washed before they go out to dry, which strips the fruit pulp away early and gives the clear, clean cup that washed African coffees are known for.

The roast

We roast this coffee at a fairly low temperature. It takes colour faster than most beans do, so even with a gentle roast it lands squarely in the middle: a medium roast, not a dark one. That keeps the fruit in the cup. You get chocolate first, then stone fruit, and a finish that stays fruity rather than turning bitter. On our own scale it sits at 6 out of 13, which is where a filter or cafetière coffee is usually happiest, though it takes an espresso grind well if you want the fruit concentrated.

FAQ
Customer Questions
What is the roast date?

The roast date of Café du Jour's coffee beans is usually a maximum of four weeks before dispatch. This means that the coffee beans are generally no older than four weeks when they arrive at your door.

Many people ask if coffee beans are already too old after three weeks. The answer to that is: no. Freshly roasted coffee actually reaches its best flavour after a few weeks. During roasting, carbon dioxide (CO₂) is created inside the coffee beans, which can mask the taste at first. That is why coffee is at its best between one and four weeks after roasting.

After roasting, the beans are immediately packed in special coffee bags with a one-way valve. This valve allows CO₂ to escape without letting oxygen in, so the aromas are preserved and the coffee remains fresh. This way, you can count on an optimally fresh product with a full flavour!

What are the main flavour characteristics of these Rwanda speciality 100% arabica coffee beans?
This coffee is characterised by a good balance between intensity and subtlety. You will taste chocolate and earthy notes, combined with a light spiciness. In the aftertaste, a delicate fruitiness emerges, with a hint of berries and blackberries instead of citrus. The flavour remains clearly present even in a cappuccino, with a touch of chocolate.
What is the ideal grind size and brewing method for these coffee beans?
These coffee beans can be ground slightly coarser than other beans in our range, especially if you are using an espresso machine (such as a Sage Barista Express). For espresso, a brewing time of 25 seconds for 30 ml is recommended. Due to the balanced flavours, the bean is suitable for both espresso and cappuccino, but for larger cappuccinos a slightly stronger bean may be desirable.
Does the flavour of this coffee hold up well in milk-based drinks such as cappuccino?
Yes, this coffee is excellent in milk-based drinks such as cappuccino. The characteristic chocolate and fruit notes come through well, creating an experience as if you are enjoying a piece of chocolate with your coffee. However, we recommend using smaller cups (for example, 160 ml) for a good flavour balance.
