A resin water softener that plumbs straight into the line feeding your espresso machine, with 3/8" BSP metal threads on the taps top and bottom. What it does

The DVA softener goes into the water line ahead of your espresso machine and runs the supply through an ion-exchange resin, taking the hardness out before it reaches the boiler. Less limescale settles inside the machine, and the coffee tastes cleaner because the water behind it is cleaner. When the resin is exhausted you do not throw it out: you regenerate it with salt and carry on.

Choosing a size

All three sizes share the same housing and the same 3/8" BSP metal threads on the top and bottom taps. What differs is how much water they get through before the resin needs regenerating, so the bigger the unit, the less often that job comes round.

The unit is compact enough to tuck away in most kitchen presses.

Before you connect it

Mains pressure needs to sit between 1 and 8 bar; above that, fit a pressure reducer ahead of the softener. Flush a new filter with at least 10 litres of water before first use, and again after every regeneration, until the water coming out runs clear. Water that looks a little white or cloudy in the first litres is normal and does no harm. If the softener has stood idle for a while, rinse it through again before you put it back to work.

What is the maximum input water pressure for the 12 litre DVA water softener?

The DVA water softener runs on a supply pressure of at least 1 bar and no more than 8 bar. That range applies to the 12 litre version as well as to the 5 and 8 litre versions, since they share the same housing and the same 3/8" BSP connections.

Most household and hospitality mains supplies sit comfortably within that window. If your mains pressure is higher than 8 bar, fit a pressure reducer ahead of the softener, otherwise you risk damaging the housing and the seals. Before first use, flush the unit with plenty of water (10 litres or more) until the water leaving the filter runs clear. After that, regenerate the resin with salt once you reach the throughput stated in the manual.

Can the filter remain unused for a few days without any problems?
No, we recommend not leaving the filter unused for more than two days. If left unused for longer periods, bacteria can develop in the filter. If the filter is not used for an extended time, we advise thoroughly rinsing it again before putting it back into use.
Which size DVA water softener do I need for my situation?
The right size depends on your water consumption: the 5 litre is generally suitable for regular household use, the 8 litre for intensive home use or light catering use, and the 12 litre for professional (catering) use. My water filter is leaking at the connection or the bottom. What can I do about this?
Leakage at the connection or underside may be caused by a worn or poorly sealed O-ring, or by hairline cracks in the brass fitting. Check that the O-ring is properly seated in the collar and replace it if necessary. We advise you not to overtighten the locking nut, as excessive force can damage the fitting. Please note that the filter is only designed for use with domestic water pressure. Contact us if you suspect there is a manufacturing fault.
After regeneration and thorough rinsing, the water sometimes remains a bit white or cloudy. Is that normal?
After regenerating and rinsing, the water may appear slightly cloudy or white, especially when the filter is new or has just been regenerated. This change in colour is usually harmless and does not affect the taste. Always make sure to flush at least 10 litres of water through the filter when putting it into use or after each regeneration until the water is clear. If the water stays white for longer, rinse the filter thoroughly again.
