Descaler for Senseo machines: powder, liquid and tablets

Descaler for your Senseo

Limescale builds up in the heating element and water lines of every Senseo, and faster in a hard-water area. The first signs are coffee that runs through slowly and comes out less hot than it should. Here you will find descaling powder, liquid descaler and descaling tablets for your Senseo pod machine, with the steps to use them further down this page.

Which descaler to choose

A Senseo does not need a descaler with its own name on it. Any descaler made for coffee machines will do the job; the real difference between the products on this page is how you measure out a dose.

  • Powder in sachets: you dissolve a sachet in water, usually one sachet per descaling round, so there is nothing to measure
  • Liquid descaler: one bottle is enough for several rounds; you measure out the dose given on the label
  • Descaling tablets: pre-dosed, and you dissolve them in water as the pack describes

Most coffee machine descalers are based on citric acid or lactic acid. Both dissolve limescale; lactic acid works a little more gently. Used at the dose on the pack, either is suitable for a Senseo, so stick to that dose rather than making the mix stronger.

When your Senseo needs descaling

If your Senseo has a descaling light, it tells you when it is time. Without one, go by the coffee and by the calendar. Descaling every two to three months is a sensible routine, and more often if your tap water is hard.

  • The descaling light is on or flashing
  • The coffee takes longer to run through
  • The coffee is less hot than it used to be
  • The machine makes more noise than usual while it brews

Limescale comes from the water, not the coffee, so it builds up just as fast with Senseo pods as with any other coffee pods: what counts is how much water goes through the machine. A water filter slows the build-up down, but you will still need to descale.

How to descale a Senseo

Check the manual for your model before you start, because the button sequence is not the same on every Senseo. The outline below applies to most of them.

  1. Remove any used pod from the pod holder and empty the water tank.
  2. Make up the descaling solution as the pack describes and pour it into the tank.
  3. Put a large bowl or jug under the spout: the machine runs the whole tankful through.
  4. Start the descaling programme. On many models you hold down the one-cup and the two-cup button together until the light flashes; some models use a different combination, which is where the manual comes in.
  5. Let the machine work. It pumps the solution through in several stages, with pauses in between, so leave it until it has finished.
  6. Rinse the tank, fill it with clean water and run it through. Do this twice, so no descaler is left in the coffee.

If the descaling light is still on afterwards, or the coffee still runs slowly, the machine probably had a lot of limescale. Repeat the round with a fresh dose.

Cleaning the rest of the machine

Descaling deals with limescale, not with coffee residue. Rinse the pod holder under the tap about once a week, and wash the water tank now and then. Cleaning tablets remove the coffee oils that build up where water and coffee meet. For the rest of your machine care, have a look at our coffee equipment.

Frequently asked questions about descaling a Senseo
How often should you descale your Senseo?

Philips advises descaling your Senseo every three months under normal use. If you use it daily or live in a hard-water area, every two months is sensible. The machine will also indicate this via the descaling light.

Can I descale my Senseo with vinegar?

Vinegar is a common home remedy, but Philips advises against using it on Senseo machines. It can damage internal rubber parts and leaves an odour that is hard to remove. Use a descaler specifically designed for coffee pod machines.

What is the difference between descaler sachets and liquid descaler?

Descaler sachets contain a powder you dissolve in water, while liquid descaler can be dosed straight from the bottle. Both are effective. Sachets store easily and liquid descaler is a little quicker to use.

Can I descale my Senseo with HG descaler?

HG offers a coffee machine descaler that is suitable for several brands, including Senseo. Always check the packaging to confirm it is compatible with coffee pod machines and follow the dosing instructions carefully.
