Piazza d'Oro Intenso is a strong coffee that does not taste rough. The notes are lively and dry, cedar and nutmeg with a touch of black pepper at the end of the sip, and the flavour profile is full without being heavy-handed. It is made for short, concentrated drinks: espresso, ristretto, and a cappuccino where the coffee has to carry through the milk. Whole beans, 1 kg.

Strong, but not rough
Piazza d'Oro Intenso is a full-flavoured coffee with a dry, aromatic character rather than a sweet one. Cedar and nutmeg lead, and a touch of black pepper turns up at the end of the sip. For all that intensity the cup stays subtle: the notes stay distinct instead of collapsing into one flat, roasty flavour.
How to drink it
At 10 out of 13 it sits near the top of the Café du Jour strength scale, and the way to use that is short and concentrated. As a ristretto it is dense and peppery. As an espresso it opens out, and the cedar and nutmeg get more room to show. In a cappuccino it does what a lot of milder beans cannot, which is stay recognisable under the milk rather than turning into warm, vaguely coffee-flavoured foam.
The beans come whole in a 1 kg bag, so a grinder or a bean-to-cup machine is what you want.
