Coffee beans are the heart of our range: blends from Italian brands such as illy, Lavazza and Segafredo, beans from smaller independent roasters and our own freshly roasted coffee. We buy much of the range directly from the roasters we work with, large and small, and add new beans to the selection regularly.

Arabica, Robusta or a blend

Most of the choice comes down to two species of coffee:

• Arabica is smoother and more aromatic, with fruity, floral or chocolate notes, and contains less caffeine.
• Robusta is stronger and more bitter, carries more caffeine and gives a thicker crema, which is why it turns up in many espresso blends.

Many beans are a blend of the two, labelled "100% Arabica", "Robusta blend" or something in between. A blend with some Robusta holds its own under milk in a cappuccino or latte, while a pure Arabica shows more of its character as a filter coffee or a straight espresso.

Choosing by brewing method

• Bean-to-cup machine: a medium to dark roast with a dry surface. Oily beans stick in the hopper and clog the grinder.
• Espresso machine with a portafilter: medium to dark roasts, ground fine just before you pull the shot.
• Filter, pour-over or cafetière: lighter roasts with more fruit and acidity, ground medium to coarse.
• Moka pot: medium to dark roasts, ground finer than for filter but coarser than for espresso.

Organic and Fairtrade coffee beans

If you care where your coffee comes from as much as how it tastes, look at our organic and fairtrade coffee beans. Organic coffee is grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, and the Fairtrade label means the farmers were paid at least the Fairtrade minimum price for their beans.

Coffee beans for the office and hospitality

For offices, showrooms and cafés, 1 kg bags are the practical choice: fewer refills of the hopper and less packaging to throw away. Pick a blend that suits a machine that runs all day, stick with it, and every visitor gets the same cup. Not sure which beans fit your machine? Our customer service team is happy to advise.

Why whole beans stay fresher than ground coffee

Once coffee is ground, far more of it is exposed to air and the aroma fades quickly. Whole beans keep their flavour for longer, which is why we recommend buying beans and grinding only what you need just before you brew. Keep an opened bag tightly closed in a cool, dark cupboard rather than in the fridge. Even if you use a filter machine, a simple hand grinder or an electric coffee grinder makes a clear difference in the cup.
