What it does

Scale is the usual reason a home espresso machine stops performing. Every time the boiler heats water, part of the dissolved calcium comes out of solution and settles on the heating element, in the boiler and in the narrow pipework feeding the group - the machine takes longer to come up to temperature, holds it less accurately, and in the end blocks altogether. This filter sits in the water tank on the end of the intake hose and treats the water on its way in. It is packed with 0.1 litres of ion-exchange resin, which swaps the calcium and magnesium in your water for ions that do not form scale. Softer water going in means much less scale forming inside.

Which machines it fits

It is a universal fitting, made for any espresso machine that takes its water from a reservoir through a supply hose rather than from a plumbed mains line. That covers BFC, ECM, Expobar, Isomac and VBM among many others. The two things worth checking before you order are the hose and the space: the connection is 7.5 mm, and the body needs 42 mm of clearance in the tank.

Keeping it working

Resin has a finite capacity. Once it has exchanged all the ions it can hold, the filter stops softening and the water simply passes through, so this is a part you replace rather than clean. How quickly that happens depends on how hard your water is and how much coffee you pull. Changing it takes seconds: pull the spent cartridge off the hose, push the new one on, refill the tank.

How do I best use the DVA water filter with my espresso machine?

We recommend fully submerging the filter in water for 10 minutes before use. This allows the filter to become saturated and prevents unnecessary air from entering the water supply hose and pump of your espresso machine. Once saturated, simply connect the filter to the water supply hose in the water reservoir of your espresso machine.

What benefits will I notice when I use this water filter?

This filter removes limescale from the water, which means you need to descale your espresso machine less frequently. Many customers also find that their coffee tastes smoother and that the filter takes up little space in the water tank.

Does this filter fit my espresso machine with a water tank?

This DVA water filter is suitable for almost all espresso machines with a water reservoir and a water supply hose (such as BFC, ECM, Expobar, Isomac, VBM and similar models). Please check whether your hose has an internal diameter of 7.5 mm; if it does, the filter will fit.

How often should I replace the DVA water filter for optimal results?
