A cotton bag worth keeping

This is the Café du Jour tote bag: one piece of plain cotton with our print on the front, made to be used again rather than once. It folds flat into a pocket or a glove box and comes back out when you need it, which is the whole argument for a cloth bag over a plastic one.

The cloth

The bag is 100% cotton at 140 g/m². That is a mid-weight cotton: light enough to fold away without a bulge, firm enough that a 1 kg bag of coffee does not stretch it out of shape. Cotton also washes, so a split carton of milk is not the end of the bag.

Size and handles

At 38 x 42 cm the opening is wide and the bag is slightly taller than it is wide, which suits upright items — a bag of beans, a box of tea, a loaf — better than a shallow shopper does. The two handles are 30 cm each, cut for carrying in the hand rather than slung over a shoulder.

As a gift bag

The flat shape and the plain print make it an easy way to hand over coffee or tea without wrapping anything: fill it, fold the top over, done. The bag then stays with whoever you gave it to and keeps working.
