Castle Court is a loose-leaf black tea blended by Café du Jour, with apple pieces, rosehip, cinnamon, rose petals and cornflower worked through the leaf. The black tea stays in charge: apple and rosehip give it a soft fruit note, the cinnamon a warm edge and the petals a light floral lift. It contains caffeine, as any black tea does. Loose leaf in a 100 g pack, produced in the Netherlands.

Fruit and spice on a black tea base

Castle Court is one of our own loose-leaf blends: black tea with apple pieces, rosehip, cinnamon, rose petals and cornflower. The fruit and the spice sit on top of the black tea rather than replacing it, so the cup comes out fruity and floral but still has the body you expect from a black tea. The cinnamon and the rosehip are what give it its character, a little warmth and a little tartness, and the petals make the dry leaf worth looking at.

Steeping it

This is loose tea with no bag, so you need a strainer, a paper tea filter or a pot with a built-in one. Use about 2 g, a level teaspoon, per cup, pour freshly boiled water over it and give it three to five minutes. At that dose a 100 g pack comes to around 50 cups. Steeping time is your dial for more than strength: black tea contains caffeine, and a shorter steep leaves less of it in the cup. Once the tea has cooled, the fruity, floral side comes through more clearly, which is what makes this blend worth serving as an iced tea too.

Yes, Castle Court is loose leaf tea without a bag, so you need a tea strainer, tea filter or refillable filter bag. Allow about 2 grams, a level teaspoon, per cup. Pour freshly boiled water over the tea and let it steep for 3 to 5 minutes. A teapot with a built-in filter works perfectly well too.

Can you also drink Castle Court black tea cold as iced tea?

That works very well. Brew the tea twice as strong as you are used to, let it cool down and pour it over ice cubes. The fruity and floral character comes into its own when cold. If you would like a softer version, brew it cold: around 10 grams of tea per litre of cold water, 4 to 12 hours in the fridge and then strain it. A slice of lemon or some mint finishes it off.
