Details

The Gene Café CBR101 starter pack is the short route from green beans to your own roast: the roaster, the coffee to practise on and the bags to keep the results in, all in one box.

What is in the pack

  • The Gene Café CBR101 coffee roaster in black, with adjustable temperature and roasting time. It takes 250 g of green coffee per batch.
  • 6 x 250 g of green coffee beans, a selection of different origins and varieties, so you can taste what the same roast does to different beans. The exact selection varies.
  • 6 x kraft bags with a resealable zip, each holding up to 500 g, for storing your roasts or giving them away.

Roasting your first batch

A batch of 250 g takes roughly 13 to 17 minutes. We suggest starting at about 235 °C and adjusting from there to suit the bean and your own taste; dropping the temperature a little after the first crack gives you more control over the rest of the profile. Both settings are made on the machine, so once you find a profile you like you can repeat it.

The CBR101 is quiet for a home roaster, but not silent. Customers tell us the first and second crack can be hard to pick out over it, so it is worth roasting somewhere without much background noise while you are still working a profile out.

Cleaning and safety

Take the loose chaff out of the roaster after every roast. Every twenty roasts or so we advise lifting the chaff collector off the machine and washing it in warm water, then letting all the parts dry through before the next batch. And never set the machine going and walk away: stay with it from the first minute to the last.

FAQ
Customer Questions
How do I find the right temperature and time for roasting with the Gene Café CBR101?
We recommend starting with a temperature of approximately 235°C and adjusting it based on your taste preference and the type of bean you are using. The average roasting time is between 13 and 17 minutes per batch of 250 grams. Many users indicate that experimenting with temperature and time yields the best results. If desired, you can lower the temperature slightly after the first 'crack' for more control over the roast profile.
How much noise does the Gene Café CBR101 make during roasting and does this affect hearing the 'crack'?
The Gene Café CBR101 operates relatively quietly for a home roaster, but there is certainly some noise during use. Some customers indicate that it can sometimes be difficult to clearly hear the first and second 'crack'. We recommend roasting in a quiet environment and listening carefully, especially when setting up your first roast profile.
Is it easy to clean the Gene Café CBR101 and how do I do it?
Yes, the Gene Café CBR101 is easy to clean. After each roast, remove the remaining chaff from the roaster. Every 20 roasts, we recommend removing the chaff collector from the machine and cleaning it with warm water. Allow all parts to dry thoroughly before roasting again.
Which types of green coffee beans are included in the starter pack?
The starter pack contains 6 bags of 250 grams each of green coffee beans from different origins and varieties. We put together this selection so that you can discover various taste sensations and learn what you like best. The exact offering may vary, allowing you to keep experimenting.
How soon can I use the freshly roasted coffee after roasting?
We recommend allowing the coffee to rest for at least 4 to 24 hours after roasting before using it for brewing. The flavour is at its best between days 3 and 5 after you have roasted the beans.
