Coffee grows in Papua New Guinea in the mountainous highlands at more than 1,500 metres. About 75% of all coffee is grown by smallholders. Blue Mountain coffee has its roots in Jamaica. Back in the 1920s, seeds found their way to PNG, where conditions were spot on. The process is: farmers pick the coffee beans in 3-5 rounds. The beans are then washed and sun-dried. The green beans are delivered to IDorganics. We then roast the beans into a lovely cup of coffee using the 'slow roast process' at the SUN roastery.

Taste: Coffee with an exotic, fruity aroma and a complex, subtle flavour. The strong body results in a firm yet gentle cup of coffee. This is the dark roast variant, perfect for espressos, ristrettos and cappuccinos.

FAQ
Customer Questions
Is the SUN Blue Mountain Dark Roast the same as Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee?

No. The SUN Blue Mountain grows in Papua New Guinea and not in Jamaica. The Blue Mountain coffee plant does originally come from Jamaica: in the nineteen twenties, seeds were taken to Papua New Guinea, where the conditions turned out to be ideal.

So here you are buying coffee of Blue Mountain origin from the highlands of Papua New Guinea. That is a different coffee from the Jamaican Blue Mountain, which may be listed separately in our range.

Where does the SUN Blue Mountain Dark Roast coffee come from and how is it processed?

The coffee grows in the mountainous highlands of Papua New Guinea, at more than 1500 metres above sea level. Around 75 percent of all the coffee there is grown by smallholder farmers.

The farmers pick the coffee beans in three to five rounds. The beans are then washed and dried in the sun. The green beans next go to IDorganics and are roasted at the SUN roastery with the slow roast process into this dark roast.

Which brewing method is the SUN Blue Mountain Dark Roast suitable for?

This is the dark roast version, and that roast makes it suitable for espresso, ristretto and cappuccino. The coffee has an exotic, fruity aroma and a complex, subtle flavour with a firm body.

You get whole beans in a 1 kilo pack, so you grind them in your bean to cup machine or with a separate grinder next to your espresso machine. If the cup tastes too bitter, grind a little coarser; if it tastes too sour, grind finer or dose slightly higher.

What do Fairtrade and the organic label on the SUN Blue Mountain coffee mean?

This coffee is Fairtrade certified and carries the European organic label with the code NL-BIO-01. Fairtrade stands for fair trading conditions and a minimum price for the farmers.

NL-BIO-01 is the code of the control body that verifies the organic certification. The addition non-EU agriculture indicates that the coffee was grown outside the European Union, in this case in Papua New Guinea.

How do I best store a kilo of SUN Blue Mountain coffee beans?

Store the beans cool, dark and well sealed, for example in the original bag with the seal closed or in an airtight storage tin. Do not put coffee in the fridge, because there it takes on moisture and smells.

With a kilo bag we advise transferring a small amount at a time into a tin for daily use and keeping the rest closed. That way the aroma of the beans stays intact for longer.
