Details

This organic dark chocolate from Blanxart has 82% cocoa and is made from Forastero cocoa beans grown in the Rwenzori Mountains, in the tropical basin of eastern Congo. It is part of Blanxart's Classic and Premium Origins series, in which each bar is made to bring out the aroma and character of cocoa from one particular growing region.

Where the cocoa comes from

The Rwenzori range lies on the edge of the Congo basin and is often identified with the Mountains of the Moon that the ancient geographer Ptolemy named as the source of the Nile. The foothills, where the cocoa grows, have a mild climate, and vanilla is grown there alongside single-origin cocoa. Beans from this area have a distinctly fruity aroma.

Taste and texture

With 82% cocoa this is a properly dark bar. It is aromatic, carries the fruity character of Rwenzori cocoa and has a very smooth texture. It is certified organic, and it is both vegan and gluten-free.

Customer Questions
What is in the Blanxart Congo Mountains of the moon 82% dark chocolate?

The ingredient list of this bar is short: cocoa beans, sugar, cocoa butter and vanilla. The cocoa content is 82 percent, which leaves little room for sugar and makes the taste intense and slightly bitter.

The bar weighs 100 grams. Per 100 grams this chocolate contains 599 kcal (2505 kJ), 51.8 grams of fat of which 32.3 grams saturated, 22.7 grams of carbohydrates of which 18.1 grams sugars, 9.0 grams of protein and 0.01 grams of salt.

Is the Blanxart Congo 82% dark chocolate vegan and gluten free?

Yes. According to Blanxart's product information, this bar is vegan and free from gluten. That matches the ingredient list: cocoa beans, sugar, cocoa butter and vanilla, so no dairy components and no cereal components.

Do note that the bar is made in a production environment where milk, nuts, soy, peanuts and sesame are also handled. If you have an allergy, always read the label on the packaging.

Does this Blanxart chocolate bar contain allergens such as milk, nuts or soy?

The bar itself contains only cocoa beans, sugar, cocoa butter and vanilla. The manufacturer does state that this chocolate is produced at a site where milk, nuts, soy, peanuts and sesame are also handled, so traces cannot be ruled out.

If you have an allergy, always go by the label on the packaging. That is the most up to date source.

Where does the cocoa for the Blanxart Congo Mountains of the moon come from and is the bar organic?

This bar is made from Forastero cocoa beans harvested in the Rwenzori Mountains, the so called Mountains of the Moon, in the tropical basin of eastern Congo. The chocolate itself is produced by Blanxart in Spain.

The bar is organically certified under control number ES-ECO-019-CT, which is also shown on the packaging.

How do I store this Blanxart dark chocolate bar best?

We recommend storing the bar cool, dry and dark, preferably at around 15 to 18 degrees and tightly closed. Chocolate picks up odours fairly easily, so do not put the bar next to strong smelling products.

Do not put this chocolate in the fridge. The cold and the moisture can make the bar turn grey with bloom and it loses part of its aroma and its snap.
