Cafetto cleaners for espresso machines

Every espresso leaves a thin layer of coffee oil behind in the group head, the shower screen and the brewing unit. Over time that layer turns rancid and gives your coffee a stale, bitter edge. Regular cleaning with a product made for coffee machines removes it.

Powder or tablets?

Powder lets you dose it yourself. That makes EVO practical for backflushing an espresso machine with a portafilter, and for soaking portafilters, baskets and other removable parts in a cleaning solution.

Tablets are pre-measured, so there is nothing to weigh. Many bean-to-cup machines have a cleaning programme that asks for one tablet of a specific size. Check your machine's manual to see which size it needs before choosing between Tevo mini and Tevo Maxi.

Backflushing with Cafetto EVO

Backflushing cleans the group head of an espresso machine with a three-way valve. You use a blind filter: a basket without holes in your portafilter.

1. Put the blind filter in the portafilter
2. Add the amount of Cafetto EVO given on the pack
3. Lock the portafilter in and start the pump for a few seconds, then stop it
4. Repeat three to five times, until the water runs clear
5. Remove the portafilter, rinse it, and repeat the cycle with clean water only to flush out any cleaner

If your machine has no three-way valve, it can't backflush. In that case, follow the cleaning instructions in your manual.

How often should you clean?

For an espresso machine used every day, a weekly backflush with cleaner is a sensible routine, with a quick rinse using water only in between. For a bean-to-cup machine, run the cleaning programme whenever the machine asks for it.

A complete maintenance routine

Cleaning removes coffee oil, but not limescale. For a machine that keeps working well, combine several steps:

• Descale regularly with a descaler
• Clean the brewing system with Cafetto or other coffee machine cleaning tablets
• Use a water filter to reduce limescale
