This spice mix for mulled wine is made up of cloves, star anise, cinnamon, sweet and bitter orange peel, and aniseed. It's based on a traditional German recipe. All you need to do with this mix is heat the red wine and add 2 tablespoons of spices. Let it steep to your liking.

Glühwein is particularly popular in central Europe but is quickly becoming a hit in the rest of Europe. It's especially loved during the winter months and around Christmas.

  • Use a bottle (about 75cl) of red wine (a store brand is grand) and heat gently in a pot (make sure it doesn't boil!)
  • Add 2 tablespoons of mulled wine spices. If you'd prefer not to have the herbs floating, pop them into a spice or tea egg.
  • Let it soak for at least 5 minutes in the hot, non-boiling red wine
  • If you fancy, add sugar to taste

FAQ
Customer Questions
What flavour can I expect from this mulled wine spice mix?
Our spice mix gives your mulled wine a classic, wintry flavour thanks to, among others, star anise, cloves, orange peel, real Ceylon cinnamon and anise. The mix creates a spicy, warm, slightly sweet and citrus-fresh mulled wine. You can add extra sugar, lemon or fresh orange to taste.
How much mulled wine can I make with one 50 gram bag of spice mix?
With one 50 gram sachet you can make approximately 6 to 8 litres of mulled wine, depending on how many spices you use per litre. We recommend about 2 tablespoons (approximately 6-8 grams) per 0.75 to 1 litre of wine.
Does this spice mix contain only spices, or are there already sweeteners or other additives included?
This blend contains only pure spices: star anise, cloves, orange peel (2 types), Ceylon cinnamon and anise. No sweeteners, sugars or other additives have been added. You can add sugar or fruit to your mulled wine to taste.
Should I add the spices loose or is it better to use a filter?
We recommend adding the mulled wine spice mix to the wine preferably using a tea or herb filter (or, for example, a reusable tea bag). This prevents the loose pieces from floating in the drink. Remove the filter once you have reached the desired strength of flavour.
