Green tea from Tea of Life

Plain green tea: no flavouring, no fruit, no spice. What you get is the leaf itself — light in the cup, fresh, faintly grassy, finishing dry and clean rather than heavy. Twenty-five tea bags, each sealed in its own wrapper.

Water off the boil, not on it

This is where most green tea goes wrong at home. Boiling water scalds the leaf and the cup turns bitter and astringent. Let the kettle sit for a minute or two after it clicks off, pour, and lift the bag out after two to three minutes. Done that way the tea is pale, clear and easy to drink; done with water straight off the boil it is sharp and hard work.

Through the day

Green tea takes neither milk nor sugar, which makes it a straightforward thing to keep beside a desk or to drink after a meal. Like all tea from the tea plant it contains caffeine, so most people keep it for daytime rather than last thing at night.

Fairtrade, and wrapped one by one

The tea is Fairtrade certified, so the leaf is bought on Fairtrade terms. Every bag has its own wrapper rather than sitting loose in the box, which keeps air off the leaf between cups and lets you carry one or two with you without them going flat.
