Islands of the Netherlands black tea

This blend takes its name and its character from the Dutch Wadden Islands, where sea buckthorn grows wild in the dunes. Alongside the black tea the pack holds whole sea buckthorn berries, juniper berries and blackberry leaf, finished with natural flavouring.

Sea buckthorn is what you notice first. It is a bright, tart orange berry, and it is what gives this tea the gentle, fresh-sweet flavour you will not easily find in a standard black tea. Soft and fruity overall, and a good deal less austere than black tea on its own.

Brewing

The berry pieces are large, so give them room: a tea egg, a wide strainer or a teapot filter suits this blend better than a tightly packed infuser, and it keeps the bits out of your cup. Use a rounded teaspoon per cup, pour over freshly boiled water and let it steep for three to five minutes, longer if you want the fruit further forward. At that dose a 100 g pack of loose tea makes roughly 40 to 50 cups. Black tea is the base, so the cup contains caffeine; worth remembering if you had it in mind as an evening cup.
