Chai tea bags from Tea of Life

Chai is a spiced tea, and this one is built on the classic three: cinnamon for sweetness, cardamom for its cool, resinous note, and ginger for warmth at the back of the throat. The spices are organic and Fairtrade certified, and they arrive ready measured in 25 individually wrapped bags, which saves grinding and simmering a pot of your own.

Black, or with hot milk

Made with water alone the cup is clear and aromatic and the cardamom comes forward. Made the traditional Indian way — brewed strong, then topped up with hot milk and sweetened to taste — it turns creamy and the cinnamon takes over. Either way, give the bag four to five minutes: whole spices need longer than tea leaf to give up their flavour.

The blend is certified organic under control code NL-BIO-01 and carries Fairtrade certification, so the spices are bought on Fairtrade terms. Sealing each bag on its own matters more with spice than with plain tea, because cardamom and ginger lose their aroma quickly once the box is open to the air.
