Where the used puck goes

Every espresso leaves a compacted puck in the portafilter, and it has to come out before the next shot. A knock box is the place to put it: tap the portafilter against the rim and the puck drops straight in, instead of going down a sink that will not thank you for it.

The JoeFrex Knock Box Classic is a beech cube, 14 x 14 x 14 cm, finished in black and open at the top. Inside sits a removable PVC container that catches the pucks. When it is full you lift it out, tip it into the bin and drop it back in, which keeps the wood itself out of the wet work.

On the counter

It weighs 1 kg, and that is the point of a wooden box rather than a light plastic one: it takes the knock without sliding across the worktop. The 14 cm footprint is small enough to stand beside the machine with the rest of your coffee equipment instead of living in a cupboard, and the square shape means there is no right way round to put it down.

Cleaning

Wipe the beech with a damp cloth. Wash the PVC insert separately and let it dry before it goes back in.
