Dark-roasted Italian beans in a 1 kg bag: these Lavazza coffee beans bring together Brazilian and Colombian Arabica with Asian Robusta. The dark roast pushes the sweet, spiced side forward — dates, cinnamon, spiced biscuit, a little honey and almond — while the Robusta keeps the body up under milk. Good as a firm espresso, good in a cappuccino, and plenty of character as filter coffee.

What goes into Super Gusto
Lavazza builds Super Gusto from natural Brazilian Arabica out of Cerrado, Mogiana and South Minas, washed Colombian Arabica from the Andes, and Asian Robusta. The naturals bring the sweetness and the dried-fruit side, the washed Colombian keeps the cup clean, and the Robusta adds weight and crema. The roast is dark, taken far enough to draw out the spice without burning off the aroma.
In the cup
Dates, cinnamon and spiced biscuit lead, with freshly baked bread in the aroma. Underneath sit honey, almond, caramel and dried fruit, and the finish is warm and faintly spicy rather than sharp. At 8 out of 13 on our strength scale it is a full cup that still stops short of a bitter bar roast.
Brewing it
As an espresso it gives a dense shot under a firm crema. In a cappuccino or a latte the spice and the sweetness stay legible through the milk, which is where this blend is at its best. Filter brewing gives you the body and a longer drink, though the sweeter notes read more clearly in a short one. Whole beans, so you will need a grinder or a bean-to-cup machine.
