Milk / Cappuccino Thermometer

A clip-on dial thermometer for a milk jug, so you can follow the temperature while you steam instead of guessing from the feel of the metal. The guidelines supplied with it give 66 to 77°C for steamed milk, 88 to 93°C for coffee and 79 to 82°C for hot chocolate. It fits a stainless steel jug well, and you can adjust the reading yourself with boiling water and a small spanner.
Watch the milk instead of guessing
This thermometer clips onto the rim of your milk jug so you can follow the temperature while you steam, rather than judging it by how hot the metal feels against your hand. Clip it on, keep an eye on the needle and shut the steam off as soon as it reaches the range you are aiming for. Take milk past the range given for cappuccino and it turns less sweet, and the foam starts to lose its structure.
Three guidelines, one dial
The guidelines that come with the thermometer cover three drinks, so the same dial does more than milk:
- Steamed milk: 66 to 77°C
- Coffee: 88 to 93°C
- Hot chocolate: 79 to 82°C
Fitting it to your jug
The clip grips the rim of the jug and is sized for a stainless steel milk jug, which is what most people steam in. Measure the thickness of your own rim first if you are not sure: on a very thick or double-walled rim the clip can sit too tight to go on properly.
Keeping it accurate
You can adjust the thermometer yourself with boiling water and a small spanner, and the instructions for that are included. With normal use you will hardly ever need to, but after a long stretch of daily steaming it is a quick way to bring the reading back in line.
