Pure Rooibos is exactly that: loose rooibos and nothing else, no flavouring and no blending. Pure Rooibos is loose rooibos tea with a single ingredient on the label: rooibos. No flavouring, no fruit or spice blended through it, no black tea underneath. What you taste is the leaf on its own — soft, faintly sweet and fresh.

What rooibos actually is

Rooibos comes from Aspalathus linearis, a shrub with fine, needle-shaped leaves. It is not a tea plant, which is why it carries no caffeine of its own and why it is so low in tannins — the compounds that make an over-steeped black tea turn dry and bitter.

Brewing it

Loose leaf means you set the strength: a heaped teaspoon per cup is a sensible place to start, more if you want it fuller. Pour on water just off the boil and give it five minutes or longer. There is no rush to strain it, because a long steep only makes rooibos stronger, not harsher. Left to cool, the same brew makes a clean iced tea.

Where does the Pure Rooibos tea from Café du Jour come from?

This is a typical South African rooibos, recognisable by its needle-shaped leaf and its fresh, mild taste. The ingredients list consists of one ingredient: rooibos. So no flavourings, herbs or other types of tea have been added. We pack the tea ourselves at our tea packing facility in the Netherlands, in 100 gram bags. No, this Pure Rooibos is caffeine free. Rooibos does not come from the tea plant but from a South African shrub, which means it naturally contains no caffeine. How do you brew Pure Rooibos and how long should it steep?

At about 2 grams per cup, this 100 gram bag gives you around 50 cups of tea. If you like it a bit stronger, you will end up with slightly fewer. For a whole pot, allow 2 grams for each cup it holds.

What is the best way to store loose rooibos tea?
