The Brita Purity C filter head 1013637 is the part that stays put: cartridges are replaced, the head is not. Its bypass is adjustable from 0 to 70 percent, and that setting decides how much tap water is blended back in untreated. Turn it down for softer water, turn it up to leave more minerals in. It matters for taste as well as for the machine, because water stripped of everything makes flat coffee while hard water leaves limescale. It arrives set to 30 percent.

Fitting it yourself

The connection is a G 3/8 inch thread, so the head goes onto pipework of the same size without special tools; the user guide takes you through it step by step. The flushing and venting valve is part of the head, which means you can flush the filter at start-up and after every cartridge change without disconnecting anything.
