Despertando is Café du Jour's espresso coffee, roasted for the machine but not taken into darkness: no scorched edge, and still plenty of punch in a short cup. It holds its own in a cappuccino instead of vanishing under the milk, and it is just as good put through a filter. Whole beans, so a grinder or a bean-to-cup machine is needed.

Details

Despertando, an espresso from Café du Jour

Despertando is roasted with the espresso machine in mind, and a short cup is where it is at its best: dense, and with a genuine punch to it. What it is not is a dark roast. Italian-style espresso beans are usually taken a long way into the roast, which is where the burnt, bitter edge comes from that some drinkers want and others cannot stand. Despertando stops short of that, so what you taste is the coffee rather than the char.

Where it works

In a cappuccino it stays audible under the milk, which plenty of lighter espresso beans do not. Through a filter it gives a full, strong brew rather than the delicate cup a filter roast would produce — worth trying if you have both machines standing in the kitchen. At 8 out of 13 on our strength scale it sits well above the middle, so treat the dose with a bit of respect the first time.

FAQ
Customer Questions
What is the roast date?

The roast date of Café du Jour's coffee beans is usually a maximum of four weeks before dispatch. This means that the coffee beans are generally no older than four weeks when they arrive at your door.

Many people ask if coffee beans are already too old after three weeks. The answer to that is: no. Freshly roasted coffee actually reaches its best flavour after a few weeks. During roasting, carbon dioxide (CO₂) is created inside the coffee beans, which can mask the taste at first. That is why coffee is at its best between one and four weeks after roasting.

After roasting, the beans are immediately packed in special coffee bags with a one-way valve. This valve allows CO₂ to escape without letting oxygen in, so the aromas are preserved and the coffee remains fresh. This way, you can count on an optimally fresh product with a full flavour!

Does this coffee produce a good crema layer when making espresso?
Yes, Espresso Despertando is known for its beautiful crema layer when making an espresso. Various customers particularly appreciate this thick, creamy crema, which is a sign of freshness and quality.
Are these coffee beans suitable for both espresso and filter coffee?
Yes. Although we enjoy drinking this blend as an espresso, Espresso Despertando is also suitable for filter coffee. Thanks to its not-too-dark roast profile and rich flavour experience, the beans perform well with various brewing methods.
How would you describe the flavour of Espresso Despertando?
Espresso Despertando is characterised by an intense, full flavour with distinct chocolate-like notes and a lightly floral finish. The undertone is slightly spicy and, thanks to a generous dose of caffeine, this coffee provides a real 'kick'.
Are these coffee beans very strong in flavour or are they also suitable for a cappuccino?
These beans have a powerful flavour (intensity 8), but are not excessively dark roasted, making them also perfectly suitable for cappuccinos or other milk-based drinks. The flavour remains well present alongside the milk.
Is Café du Jour Espresso Despertando a decaffeinated coffee?

No, Café du Jour Espresso Despertando is not a decaf. This blend simply contains caffeine, and to be honest quite a lot of it.

Despertando was made precisely for those moments when you need to wake up. It is a mostly Colombian blend with some African and Asian beans added, roasted not too dark, with a chocolatey start, a floral touch and a lightly spicy undertone. If you are after a coffee without caffeine, have a look at our decaf range instead, because this one is not part of it.
