Espresso machine detergent in powder form

Clean Express cleaning powder is a coffee machine cleaner for the parts that coffee oil clings to: the brewing group, the filters and the filter holders. Nuova Ricambi, the Italian company behind Clean Express, makes it as a white, odourless powder that dissolves easily, breaks down coffee fats and releases active oxygen as it works. The solution rinses out completely, leaving no residue on the parts it has cleaned.

Backflushing the group

On an espresso machine with a portafilter:

• Put 1 teaspoon of powder in the blind filter and lock the portafilter in.
• Run the group as if you were making a coffee.
• Open and close it at intervals of about 10 seconds, four or five times.
• Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Backflushing strips away lubricant as well as coffee oil, so a group lever can feel stiffer afterwards. Grease the moving parts again with a food-grade silicone grease. For normal home use, a chemical backflush every two to three months is usually enough.

Soaking filters and holders

Dissolve about 1 tablespoon of powder per litre of hot water and leave filters, baskets and filter holders in it for 30 minutes or more, then rinse them well. The powder is also used to clean the brew unit of fully automatic machines.

Not a descaler

This powder deals with grease and coffee residue, not limescale; descaling is a separate step with its own product. The powder irritates the eyes, so handle it with care and wash your hands after use.
