Character Bright Blend is the light, lively end of the Costa Coffee range: 100% Arabica, medium roasted, with soft milk chocolate over fresh citrus and red apple. Mild but aromatic, it pulls an elegant espresso or lungo and holds up just as well in a filter brew. The refined acidity and light body suit it to black coffee and to the gentler milk drinks — flat white, cappuccino. Whole beans, 1 kg.

Details

The Character Bright Blend is the lighter end of the Costa Coffee range: 100% Arabica, medium roasted, and named for the brightness that comes through in the cup.

How it tastes

Soft notes of milk chocolate first, then fresh accents of citrus and red apple over a light body and a refined acidity. We rate it 6 out of 13, which puts it in the regular band — mild, but with plenty of aroma. That makes it a coffee you can drink black without it turning heavy, and a good partner for the gentler milk drinks: a flat white, a cappuccino, a lungo.

Which machines it suits

These are whole beans, so a bean-to-cup or a semi-automatic machine is the obvious home for them. A medium roast is also less oily than a dark roast, which is kinder to the grinder of a bean-to-cup machine. The blend does well in filter brews too — drip, Chemex, AeroPress — and in a cafetière or a percolator. Grind to suit whichever you use: a filter grind and a percolator grind are not interchangeable.

FAQ
Customer Questions
Is the Costa Coffee Character Bright Blend suitable for a bean to cup machine?

Yes. These are whole coffee beans with a medium roast, suitable for both a bean to cup machine and a semi-automatic machine. Medium roasted Arabica is less oily than a dark roast, which is kind to the grinder of a bean to cup machine.

This blend is also listed as suitable for filter coffee, cafetiere and percolator, provided you grind the beans to the right grind size.

Which certification does the Costa Coffee Character Bright Blend have?

The beans come from sustainable plantations and carry the Rainforest Alliance certification, the logo with the green frog. That is the only certification linked to this blend.

The Costa Coffee Character Bright Blend does not have an organic certification.

What does the Costa Coffee Character Bright Blend Medium Roast taste like?

This is a one hundred percent Arabica coffee with a light and lively character. Thanks to the medium roast you taste soft notes of milk chocolate with fresh accents of citrus and red apple.

The intensity is 6 out of 13, which we classify as regular, so mild but aromatic. That makes it suitable for black coffee and for gentle milk drinks such as flat white and cappuccino.

Can I also use the Costa Coffee Character Bright Blend for filter coffee?

Yes. Thanks to its refined acidity and light body, this blend performs well in filter brews such as drip, Chemex and AeroPress. Cafetiere and percolator are possible as well.

Do pay attention to the grind size. For a pour-over filter or a filter coffee machine you use a filter grind, and for a percolator a percolator grind. Those two are not interchangeable.

How many cups of coffee do I get from a kilo of Costa Coffee Character Bright Blend?

For filter coffee, allow about 5 to 8 grams per cup. A 1 kilo bag then gives you roughly 125 to 200 cups.

For a double espresso you use 16 to 20 grams, which works out at around 50 to 60 double espressos per kilo. The exact amount depends on your machine and on how strong you want your coffee.
