Rooibos Ginger Lemon sets real ginger and citrus peel against a sweet rooibos base: spicy at the front, fresh and lemony behind it, with a cool note from the cucumber flavouring. Rooibos does not come from the tea plant, so there is no caffeine in the pack and no wrong time of day to drink it. Where the heat and the freshness come from

This is a rooibos tea from the Café du Jour loose range, built on a sweet rooibos base with real ginger and natural ginger flavouring for the spice, citrus peel for the lemon lift, and a natural cucumber flavouring that keeps the whole thing cool rather than hot. Sweet, spicy and fresh, in that order.

Hard to over-brew

Measure about 2 g per cup, a level teaspoon, and use boiling water, which rooibos takes without complaint. Five to seven minutes is the usual steep, but this is not a tea that turns bitter if you forget about it: leave the leaf in longer and it is the ginger that comes through more strongly, not tannin. That makes it an easy one for a pot you keep topping up, or for a cup that sits on the desk a while before you get to it.

Caffeine free, and why

Rooibos is not made from the tea plant, so it carries no caffeine of its own, and neither the ginger nor the citrus peel adds any. Evening cup, afternoon cup, cup with lunch: it makes no difference here. If you would rather have the ginger on its own, look at the ginger tea range instead.
