Rooibos carries no caffeine, so a late cup is no trouble, and the brew is red-brown, round and mildly sweet without the tannin bite of a black tea. Organic rooibos, 25 bags to a box
Tea of Life wraps its organic rooibos tea bags one by one, so the last bag in the box tastes like the first. Rooibos is not a tea leaf at all: it comes from a shrub that grows in the Cederberg mountains of South Africa and nowhere else. The cut leaf is oxidised and dried until it turns the rust-red colour the drink is named after.
What it tastes like
Round, smooth and mildly sweet, with the faintly woody note rooibos is known for and no bitterness behind it. There is very little tannin in the leaf, which is why it never turns sharp the way a black tea does when you forget about the bag. Give it a good five minutes in water straight off the boil; longer only makes it deeper, not harsher. It takes milk well and is just as good left to go cold.
No caffeine in it
Rooibos contains none at any stage, so this is the pot to put on in the evening, or to hand to someone who is off the coffee.
