Passalacqua Grancaffé is a Neapolitan espresso blend: 80% Arabica, 20% Robusta, taken to a dark roast. The Robusta is what gives it the thick crema and the weight in the cup, while the dark roast brings the spice forward. Acidity is low, the finish is long, and it holds its own under milk — a cappuccino made with it still tastes of coffee. One kilogram of whole beans.

Details

Neapolitan espresso from Passalacqua

Grancaffé is Passalacqua's espresso blend in the Neapolitan style: dark, thick and low in acid. It is made up of 80% Arabica and 20% Robusta. The Arabica carries the aroma; the Robusta is there for body and for the crema, which is what gives a Neapolitan shot its heavy, almost syrupy texture.

In the cup

The dark roast pushes the blend towards spice rather than fruit. Expect a full, aromatic cup with a spicy edge, very little acidity and a long finish that stays elegant instead of turning harsh. On our scale it sits at 8 out of 13, so it has real presence without being the heaviest bean on the shelf.

How to use it

This is a straight espresso blend, so a portafilter machine or a bean-to-cup will get the most out of it — crema needs pressure. It is equally at home in milk: the roast is dark enough that a cappuccino or a flat white still tastes of coffee rather than of milk. These are whole beans, so you will need a grinder if your machine has not got one.

FAQ
Customer Questions
Is Passalacqua Grancaffé certified organic?

No. Passalacqua has several blends and not all of them are certified organic. For Passalacqua Grancaffé, no official organic label is registered in our product data.

If you are looking specifically for certified organic coffee, take a look at our range of organic coffee beans.

Where does Passalacqua Grancaffé come from?

Passalacqua is a Neapolitan coffee roaster and this coffee is produced in Italy. Grancaffé stands in the tradition of the espresso culture of Naples.

You taste that in the dark roast, the low acidity and the powerful but elegant finish.

How much Arabica and Robusta is in Passalacqua Grancaffé?

The blend consists of eighty percent Arabica and twenty percent Robusta. The Arabica provides aroma and refinement, the Robusta adds body and a firm crema.

On our intensity scale Grancaffé is at 8 out of 13, in other words powerful. The flavour profile is full, spicy and aromatic.

Which coffee preparations is Passalacqua Grancaffé suitable for?

Grancaffé is first and foremost an espresso blend and it also comes into its own in cappuccino and other milk-based specialities. Its full body still comes through clearly when you add milk.

For a double espresso, allow around 16 to 20 grams of ground coffee. If the result is too bitter, set the grind size a little coarser or let the espresso run through for a shorter time.

Do I get whole coffee beans or ground coffee with Passalacqua Grancaffé?

You receive whole coffee beans in a 1 kilo bag. So you need a coffee grinder or a machine with a built-in grinder.

Only grind the beans just before brewing. For espresso you use a fine espresso grind, for a percolator or filter machine a coarser grind.
