Details

Caffè Vergnano Antica Bottega is a whole-bean coffee from the Caffè Vergnano 1882 line, made from 100% Arabica and roasted dark in Italy. It comes in a 1 kg bag.

Flavour and strength

Expect chocolate and fruity notes in a balanced cup with good body. Despite the dark roast it is not a heavy hitter: Café du Jour rates it 5 out of 13 for intensity, and Caffè Vergnano gives it intensity 5/10 on the manufacturer's scale. That moderate strength makes it an easy coffee to drink every day, straight or with milk.

How to brew it

Because you grind the beans yourself, one bag covers several ways of making coffee. Grind fine for espresso, whether you use a portafilter or a bean-to-cup machine, and use that espresso as the base for a cappuccino. For filter coffee, set the grinder a little coarser.

  • Espresso: fine grind
  • Cappuccino: espresso topped with frothed milk
  • Filter coffee: slightly coarser grind

Whole beans also give you room to fine-tune. If an espresso runs through quickly and tastes thin, grind a touch finer; if it drips slowly and tastes bitter, go a little coarser. Grind only what you need and keep the bag closed in between.
