Jamaica Blue Mountain Grade 1 from Wallenford Estate, one of the best-known producers in Jamaica's Blue Mountains. Washed Arabica, mostly of the Typica variety, famous for its mild, creamy flavour without bitterness.
"Blue Mountain Coffee" is a protected name: only officially certified coffee from this region may carry it. The green beans reach us in the distinctive barrels in which Jamaica Blue Mountain has traditionally been exported.
We give these beans a medium roast, in small batches. Because we roast often and in small quantities, the roast date is always recent. Expect a smooth, creamy cup with notes of milk chocolate and hardly any bitterness.
Exclusive coffee beans from the Blue Mountains in eastern Jamaica, where the peaks rise to 2,300 metres. Grade 1, washed, from Wallenford Estate.
Wallenford Estate
Wallenford is one of the major exporters and for a long time the largest producer of Blue Mountain coffee, with more than 5,000 acres of plantations. The company runs the entire supply chain itself. At local pulperies the coffee cherries are pulped and washed, after which the beans go to central drying facilities in Clarendon. There they are dried, hulled, graded, hand-sorted and packed in the well-known barrels.
Wallenford says it takes pride in the ethical treatment and fair pricing of its farmers, and offers them, their families and their communities extensive technical support.
Why Blue Mountain is so special
The cool, moist and fertile mountains allow the coffee cherries to ripen slowly. Almost 90% of the coffee plants in Jamaica are of the Typica variety: an old Arabica with low yields but a mild, smooth cup. "Blue Mountain Coffee" is a protected trademark; only coffee certified by the Jamaican authorities may carry that name.
Flavour and brewing
We give the beans a medium roast. The result is a smooth, creamy coffee with notes of milk chocolate, a gentle sweetness and hardly any bitterness. Ideally taste it black first, as filter coffee, pour-over or from a cafetière. It works as an espresso too, but a mild coffee like this is easily lost under a lot of milk.
